Can you really cut glass with an angle grinder?
Yes, and plenty of workshops do it every day. Glass is hard but brittle, which sounds like a bad match for a tool spinning at 12,000 RPM. The trick is that you are not cutting glass the way you cut steel. You are grinding a groove through it with diamond grit, slowly, while heat and vibration stay under control.

Why does glass chip and crack when you cut it?
Three things break glass mid-cut.
A toothed or segmented rim. Every gap in the rim lands like a tiny hammer strike on the edge of the glass. On steel that does not matter. On glass, each strike starts a chip, and chips turn into cracks.
Heat. Glass expands where it gets hot. When one spot expands and the sheet around it does not, that stress has to go somewhere. It goes into a crack.
Pressure. Pushing harder does not cut faster. It flexes the sheet and loads the edge sideways, which is exactly how glass fails.

How do you cut glass without cracking it?

- Support the whole sheet. Lay it flat on a firm surface, never spanning a gap. Unsupported glass flexes, and flexing glass cracks.
- Tape the cut line. Painter's tape gives the disc something to bite at the start and keeps the surface from chipping.
- Keep it wet. A trickle of water, or a spray bottle and a second pair of hands, controls both heat and dust. Wet cutting also stops the diamond grit from glazing over.
- Score first, then deepen. Make one shallow pass along the whole line before going deeper. Cutting through in a single pass is how sheets break.
- Let the disc do the work. Light pressure, steady speed. If it is not cutting, the answer is never more force.
Can you cut a mirror the same way?
Yes, with one change: cut from the glass side, not the backing. The silvered coating chips more easily than the glass itself. Tape the back to hold the coating together and support it exactly like a plain sheet.
What safety gear do you actually need?
Glass throws fragments sharp enough to open skin and small enough to reach your eye. This is not the job to skip gear on.
- Wraparound safety glasses. Side coverage matters, because fragments do not only come at you from the front.
- Cut resistant gloves. A freshly cut edge of glass is as sharp as anything in your shop.
- Ear protection. A grinder on glass is loud and shrill, and hearing damage does not announce itself.
- A guard on the tool. It clamps on in seconds and stands between you and the disc.
