How Long Should an Angle Grinder Disc Last?

Short answer: It depends far more on the type of disc than on the brand. An abrasive cut-off wheel is consumed as it works and shrinks until it is unusable. A diamond disc keeps its diameter and lasts until the grit is worn off the rim, which is a different order of magnitude.

Why do abrasive wheels wear out so fast?

Because that is how they cut. An abrasive wheel is a bonded block of grit. Cutting exposes fresh grit by wearing away the old, which means the wheel sacrifices itself continuously.

You can watch it happen. A wheel starts at 4 inches and ends the size of a coin. And as it shrinks, two things get worse:

  • Cutting speed drops. The rim moves slower as the diameter falls, so each cut takes longer than the last.
  • Depth of cut drops. A worn wheel simply cannot reach as far.

By the end you are working with a tool that has quietly become half as capable.

How is a diamond disc different?

A diamond disc has a steel body with diamond grit bonded to the rim. The grit does the cutting, and the body stays the size it started.

That means the last cut runs at the same rim speed as the first, and the disc reaches the same depth on day 100 as on day one. It ends its life when the grit is worn off the rim, not when the disc has disappeared.

What actually changes the lifespan?

Material. Concrete, granite and hard stone are the toughest on any rim. Mild steel and softwood are gentle by comparison.

Heat. The main killer of diamond discs. Too much heat and the bond softens, releasing grit before it is worn out. Let the disc run free for a few seconds now and then, or cut wet.

Pressure. Leaning on the tool does not speed up the cut, it just generates heat. Heavy-handed users get noticeably shorter life out of identical discs.

Correct disc for the job. A rim built for tile, driven through reinforced concrete, will not last. Matching disc to material is the cheapest way to extend life.

Technique. Square in the cut, no twisting, no side grinding.

When should I replace it?

Not on a schedule. On these signs:

  • It stops cutting and starts rubbing. The clearest signal.
  • You are pushing harder than you used to for the same cut.
  • Visible damage: chips in the rim, any crack, missing segments.
  • New vibration when the disc runs free.
  • Discolouration from overheating, blue or brown patches.

Any crack means retire it immediately, regardless of how much rim is left.

My disc stopped cutting but looks fine. What happened?

It has glazed over. This is common and often mistaken for a worn out disc.

When a diamond rim runs too hot, or cuts material that is too soft for it, the exposed diamonds dull and the bond smears across them. The disc spins, rubs and polishes instead of cutting.

You can bring it back. Cut into something abrasive: a concrete block, a paver, or a dressing stone. That wears the smeared bond away and exposes fresh grit. Then cut cooler than before, or it will glaze again.

How do I get the most out of one?

  • Light pressure, always
  • Let it cool between long cuts
  • Cut wet on stone and tile where you can
  • Use the disc built for the material
  • Keep it square in the cut
  • Store it flat and dry, not loose in a bag
